Review – Nick Heyward in concert at Acapela in July 2023

Nick Baker AKA Macwood Fleet reviews Nick Heyward in concert July 2023.

In what gig would you find Bunty Gunn, Barry Manilow, Flowers, Rock Bastards and Mudlarking all getting an honourable mention. Only one place I can think of, and that’s in a Nick Heyward gig.
Now, if you’re a Nick fan, or have seen him live before, you’ll know which way Nick’s mind works. He’s like a mental sponge. You can almost see the synapses firing in his eyes as his mind flits from one thing to the next like a butterfly on speed. He really is a unique individual. When you see him live or even speak to him you can see where the imagery, often very English, in his songs comes from.
After an excellent reception to his acoustic tour at the Acapela last year Nick has decided to play 2 nights in the venue this year. As I was there for both, I shall treat both nights as one review for the Blog.
This time Nick has gone electric and brought his Gibson and his Gretsch along with an acoustic for what will be a mainly electric performance. This time he is accompanied by Samer Sharawi on Bass/Backing Vocals and Sian Monaghan on Drums & Percussion who were excellent throughout and showed what energy and dynamism can be achieved with just three instruments in the time honoured tradition of trios such as The Police, The Jam, Cream etc.

Over the 2 nights, Nick only had a couple of changes so basically we had a full 2 hours plus per night of his greatest hits. A wise decision which paid dividends in crowd participation.I’ll nail my colours to the mast right now and say that Nick is my favourite singer/songwriter and has been since I first heard him strike a chord on the debut Haircut100 release.

So he kicks off with his second solo single from his debut album, 1993’s North Of A Miracle but with a twist. Shorn of it’s horns it turns into a bluesy almost Bossa Nova version.

Karine Polwart 17th June 2023 – POSTPONED

We have been informed this afternoon that the above concert has been cancelled by Karine due to illness. She has sent the following message.

‘I’m absolutely gutted to say that I lost my voice last night and today my throat is inflamed & sore. So I’m sad and disappointed to announce that I won’t be able to continue with the last three dates of my tour – Worcester, Bristol & Cardiff. I was particularly looking forward to these shows but we are trying to reschedule the dates as soon as possible.
I’m so sorry to let every down but huge thanks for your support and understanding.
Karine’
We are looking to rearrange the concert as soon as possible and will confirm this to you once confirmed. We will transfer existing tickets and tables to the new date automatically when agreed. If you are unable to make the new date when announced you will be able to request a refund of the ticket monies at that time.
We apologise for any disappointment caused which obviously is out of ours and Karine’s control.

CATFISH 6TH AUGUST 2023 – POSTPONED

Unfortunately as Catfish fans may be aware, lead singer and guitarist Matt Long is currently being treated for cancer. I am sure you join us in wishing him all the best with his treatment over the next few months. To help with his recovery, Catfish have drastically cut their bookings for the next few months and will only be doing a few of the festivals during his chemo this summer.  The band and Acapela have mutually agreed that Catfish’s performance there will move into Catfish’s spring tour when hopefully Matt will be through his treatment.

The new date will be Wednesday 21 February 2024. All tickets will be valid for this new date, and we very much hope you will join us then to welcome Matt back.

All tickets and tables have been automatically transferred to the new date. If you are unable to make the new date you can request a refund by emailing info@acapela.co.uk by the 31st June 2023. After this date our standard no refund policy will apply.

William Crighton – POSTPONED

Regrettably the William Crighton tour has been cancelled due to an injury sustained by the artist. See below for his full explanation.
All tickets will be refunded and should be in your account within 7-10 days.
“I am deeply saddened and very frustrated to announce that I have no choice but to cancel my UK tour which was due to begin this week. My hand, which sustained an injury and subsequent bone infection in Jan 21 has flared back up. I require surgery this week to remove a piece of wood that has been found to be still inside of my hand from the original puncture wound.

Why has it flared up this last week and been fine for the previous 12 months? I have no idea. It’s made the past 3 shows with Liz very painful. I hate cancelling shows. Especially when this, my first UK headline tour was going to be such a special time. I understand the trouble many of you went to, organising travel and planning roadtrips etc. This decision was a very difficult one to make. However, the risk of long term damage if I delayed the treatment combined with the immediate impaired function for playing guitar made it the necessary one.

Thank you for your understanding and love, ill be back out there ASAP and look forward to seeing you then”. William Crighton

We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
