The Beatrix Players supported Steve Harley for 3 nights back in June and will soon be performing their own headline concert at Acapela on 16th September.

However the amazing acoustics at Acapela brought them back last week to record a video for a new song which will appear on their upcoming album.
The studio provided a very moody backdrop for a wonderful delicate track written by the trio and you can watch it for the first time here.

The venue has had many wonderful nights over the past couple of months with many big names gracing the Acapela stage. However Emily Maguire may not be well known to the majority of the Acapela audience but after last Friday’s performance she certainly should be! If you missed Friday’s performance catch her next time – you won’t regret it!
Not knowing Emily’s back catalogue of work and not sure what to expect from her performance (as were many in attendance), we were all swept off our feet as Emily proceeded to perform a wonderful collection of songs from her 5 albums. Partnered by Christian Dunham on bass, the pair produced a sound that was so clear and beautiful it held the whole audience in rapt attention across two sets.
Emily is possessed with such a wonderful voice – up there with the very best – and you have to question why is she not heard on the radio / tv more often? So powerful and expressive, each song crafted a story of their own, many influenced by Emily’s long stuggle with mental health issues.
Highlights for me included songs “Beautiful” , “A bit of Blue” “For Free” and “Bicycle made for 2” but to be honest I could have listened to her all night long. Only one word really sums up the concert – “Captivating”.
Oh and I forgot to mention – the prize goes to Christian for being the “coolest” bass player Acapela has ever seen…..loving the “Moves” Christian!
If you missed Emily’s performance – you can catch one of her songs on Youtube (see below) which was recorded by an audience member. It doesn’t quite catch the wonderful vocals on the night but you can imagine what it sounded like – it was musical perfection!
It’s wonderful to hear from audience members following a concert whether it be in person on the night or by email / letter after the event that they have enjoyed their visit to the venue. The reasons given as to why they found Acapela so special vary differently, many love the music of course but others our grateful to the attention and service provided by the staff and others just say it was “just so different!”!
Here below Paul James our Programme Director gives his view on what makes Acapela so special!
“Of course the big stars bring a sense of excitement and anticipation to Acapela and it feels very special to hear the original artist perform a classic song close up and personal. There have been many such as “Stay with me Till Dawn” by Judie Tzuke, “Come Up and Make me Smile” by Steve Harley “Miss You” by Hazel O’Connor, “I will Find you” Moya Brennan and so on……….But what makes Acapela so special is finding a new musician or band that takes you by surprise when you least expected it…..performances such as Holy Moly and the Crackers (back next January) and last weekends concert from the outstanding Emily Maguire – concerts that make you think about the performance for days or weeks after the event!
The acoustics are great at Acapela, there are few venues (and I have been too a lot) which allow an artist to be heard with such clarity, no sounds bouncing off low ceilings or dodgy vocalists struggling to be heard – it’s how music should be heard! And then of course possibly the best part is the response from the audience…bands love coming to Acapela as they always comment on the appreciation shown by the audience…in fact Toyah Willcox informed us it was her favourite venue! It’s great to see everyone excited at the end of the concert…it certainly makes me want to go out and find the next big star or unknown musician and do it all again!”
WE WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM AUDIENCE MEMBERS ABOUT WHY ACAPELA IS SO SPECIAL TO YOU…WHETHER IT’S ABOUT A SINGLE EVENT OR A SERIES OF EVENTS YOU HAVE ATTENDED.
